On November 10 one of my photos made the frontpage of NU.nl, the most visited dutch newssite on the internet with a photo of the finding of a phosphorus grenade in Scheveningen.
Except for that I made the frontpage of the section 'general' and the newssite showed a slideshow of my other photos.

Raam en Deur - November 2007

After 'Glas in Beeld' trade journal Raam en Deur will publish a story about my 'leaded window' work'.

Raam en Deur is created for everybody working in the industry of windows and doors, for example descision makers, managers, suppliers and processors. Therefore the editing of Raam en Deur is based on five pillars: design, engeneering, application, product news and rules. Every item (five per year) has it's own theme.

working at my skills

at Fotoschool Rotterdam

A photographer has to work at his skills all the time. In oktober I will start following courses at the new well-equipped location of Fotoschool Rotterdam. All courses and masterclasses at the Fotoschool will be leaded by teachers of the Fotoacademie, the best school for Higher Vocational Education for photography in the Netherlands.
I expect to be treated with the ideal mix of technique, content and creativity. The Fotoschool has big studios with all kinds of light. Some ceilings even reach a hight of 5 metres. And there are for example digital workrooms with the newest computers, scanners, spectrophotometers and everything else a professional photographer might use.

Documenta artist asked for my photos

 

The Chicago artist Iñigo Manglano-Ovalle contacted me for high resolution photos of his work 'The Radio' and 'Phantom Truck' which he exhibited on this years Documenta 12. This time I was proud to give my photos away.

Earlier I mentioned in this news column that I don't give my photos away that easy. So why didn't I have to think twice this time? You might know how I am intruiged by the working of light (see my vinyl 'stained glass' project and the lightboxes of the exhibition glassphemy). I find Manglano-Ovalles work highly interesting and wish you could see the work for real and not only by photographs. Since both works were designed especially for Documenta 12, the registrations are the best things left. Here are some of them.

By the way, giving my photos to Manglano-Ovalle is a win-win situation as described in the earlier article. The artist will mention me as the photographer when he uses my photos.

Iñigo Manglano-Ovalle's main and larger sculpture 'Phantom Truck' is a full-scale re-construction of a mobile biological weapons lab as described by U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell when addressing the U.N. Security Council, prior to the U.S. invasion of Iraq. Also, 'Phantom Truck' is Manglano-Ovalle platonic idealization of the mobile lab. It is given reality only to conceal it again within the confines of a darkened space hidden within the exhibition.

The scale of the truck relative to the cramped dimensions of the space allows little room for maneuver. It works in combination with the small work 'The Radio' in another big room. The rooms are adjoining and the instalations are the only objects that inhabit their respective spaces.
There is no artificial light directed at or guiding the viewer to the art in these two spaces. Light in the two rooms, although substantially filtered and tinted, is wholly dependant on a natural source - daylight. Visibility of the objects and the nature of light in these spaces are contingent on external conditions, the date and the time of day, the latitude of Kassel and its weather.
Because all entrances into the space are relatively narrow, how the truck gained entry is inexplicable. Viewers can enter the space two ways, which is also to say they can exit two ways. The installation makes no attempt to enforce a particular phenomenal or semiotic progression or order of entry or exit.
Both points of access to the work involve a slight descent as the viewer moves into the piece, and a slight ascent as the viewer leaves the work. The viewer may descend into work through a dimly lit, low-ceilinged passageway that curves as the floor slopes gently downward, or the viewer may access the dark room the truck inhabits by first passing through a glowing red room, each giveing rise to a different reality. Personally I loved the tricks that the light played with my eyes walking in and out the rooms.

Russe Storer wrote in the Documenta Katoloque about this work: "Manglano-Ovalle's perceptual analyses, working as much with the limits of our senses as with what is in front of us, continues his long-standing interest in how we recieve and process information. Beginning with an existing form, be it as solid as a building or as ephemeral as a cloud, the artist reasearches the matrix of political, cultural and technological systems and processes in which it is entangled. The resultuing work, translated into an aesthetic context, is always highly formal and refined, yet Manglano-Ovalle strategically disrupts any sense of modernist autonomu. We are drwn instead into a poetic awareness of the invisble forces that shape the contemorary world."

exhibition 'Groeten uit Burnout'

at Psyq, The Hague

With my exhibition 'Groeten uit Burnout' (greetings from burnout) I show some individual ideas about burnout and about how to enrich the social and psychological environment. The exhibition lasts from October 1 2007 until March 26 2008 in therapy center Psyq Stadhoudersplantsoen 2 The Hague Holland. I hope visitors will recognise their views in the works I'll be showing. The show is open from monday until friday during working hours.

In this exhibition I combine photography with lighting effects.

Glas in Beeld - August 30, 2007

The August 2007 issue of trade journal Glas in Beeld has a short story about my 'leaded window' work, which is meant to give windows a modern version of an antique look. This work stems from my earlier exhibition Glassphemy - leaded windows sign style.

'Glas in Beeld' is the only magazine in The Netherlands for businesses that have to do with professional glass one way or the other. It's read by architects, real estate developers and glass manufacturers and more.

Do you own a beautiful old building with high ceilings plastered with ornaments? Do you love the original windows in it, but do you think it's too cold at your place? Here is the solution!

Old houses are great, but need to be restaurated once in a while. Leaded windows often don't survive the make over, because the pane has to be renewed or double glass is wanted. A pitty? Maybe not. I offer you 'leaded windows with stained glass' that might fit better to your modern furniture.

opening exhibition

Saturday the 9th of June, The Hague alderman of Culture, Jetta Klijnsma, opened the second exhibition in art gallery Toon je kunst (Show your art). I am showing works from my series 'Glassphemy' in the gallery. This video and these pictures give you an impression.

exhibition 'Glassphemy'

leaded windows sign style in gallery 'Toon je Kunst', The Hague

Glassphemy is part of a group exhibition that will be opened by Jetta Klijnsma, The Hague alderman of Culture. You are welcome to join this event on saturday June 9 between 4.00 en 6.00 p.m. in gallery 'Toon je kunst' at het corner of Beeklaan (no. 341) and Copernicusstraat (no. 123), The Hague.

We all long for beautiful things and like to expose them. You can see that looking through privat windows, when lucky chic stained glass ones. Or through a modern shop window with signs screaming 'buy this and you will feel great'. Honostly, don't you feel rich when you can have it all? Then check out what I did with 'Glassphemy - leaded window sign style'. It's is a serie of light boxes about longing, possessing and showing of.

Besides from my the photography of 'Glassphemy' you will see work of other artists. Like more photography by Peter Albus and paintings by Maurits Burgers, Anja Gerritsen, Hans Rietbergen, Liesbeth Spek, Ed Vervoorn and Kees Wattjes. Marcel Prins and Lucia Schouten exhibit sculptures. Peter Tholen will show the miniatures he made using mixed techniques.

The exhibition will last until July 17 and can be visited on wednesday and in the weekends between 2.00 and 5.00 p.m. Except from during the opening, you can meet me there on sunday July 1.
